When you sign up to become a foster family, the state will let you know when the child will be arriving, you have time to prepare, to make everything perfect for the child, to make them feel at home. It won’t be easy and it will take time but if you can make a loving home for the child then maybe they will bond with you sooner of later. Here is a list of things that you should have in making your foster child’s homecoming better than nice.

Make sure you provide a bedroom for the child, sleeping on the couch is not acceptable, check with the agency giving you the child they may have some requirements as far as how big the bedroom should be. Make sure the bedroom has at least one window; the windows should have blinds or curtains. The room should have a mirror, if you want to decorate the room before the child gets there that is acceptable, if you want to make the child more comfortable, you can allow them to decorate.

Make sure the bed has sheets, pillows and a warm blanket. There should be a dresser; an alarm clock, some storage space and the closet should be spacious enough to fit some clothes, shoes, jackets and etc. You should also provide the child with a comb or brush, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a pair of PJ’s and a bathrobe. The usually, soap, shampoo and conditioner.

To make your child feel more at home, set a special place at the dinner table for the child. It will give them a sense that they belong. Make sure that you have an adequate car; the child should be able to fit in the car without being cramped. If the child is an infant or toddler, make sure they have a proper car seat.

Make the child feel at home by introducing them to the other members of the family and then let them feel everything out, don’t force them to join in activities they don’t want. Let the child feel his way around. Let them get used to the idea of being somewhere new.
